Manaen is a person who is only mentioned once in the Bible and with very little details:
In the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. (Acts 13:1)
He had been raised with Herod the tetrarch, but at the point of Acts 13:1 he was not just an ordinary Christian. He was a spiritual leader in the church at Antioch! That is significant, because back then the spiritual qualifications for such a position were closely guarded and they were high. See 1 Tim. 3:1-13; Titus 1:6-9. To be brought up with Herod could suggest a very prominent heritage, but like Moses, he was not ensnared by any of it! He wisely put God first. So, who was Herod the tetrarch:
But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done. Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison. (Luke 3:19,20)
In brief, Herod the tetrarch was the adulterous ruling king, who had John the Baptist and James murdered (Acts 12:1,2), among other evil things, before God killed him. Manaen was brought up with Herod and later came to salvation. Manaen is one of a handful of amazing conversions to Christianity mentioned in the Scriptures.
